10/2 afternoon

nothing flying. They where harvesting the "midget property" to the north, I would imagine all of it will be out by the end of the week.

nice nice nice

Got busted setting up by four canadas coming in at 435.  Got a fly by around 530 on a single drake mallard.  Had 6 Geese deeks up north and 8 ducks just behind them and to the east.  Then I looked up at 615pm and saw two mating pair mallards locked up and right over me.  Dropped one pair and left the other to make some more pairs next spring.  Pulled up shop at shooting time and found 21 canadas jumping the fence from the north and another set of canadas low from the west- both wanted to get in real bad.  After 2 afternoon hunts I would guess that 20 min before shooting time is the best time for ducks.  I think it is safe to say that there are some new birds in town!  JR

Opening Day - Blind Limit!

Sat. Oct 24th - Opening Day
Sunrise to 10:30 or Noon
Bryan, Jamin, Tom, Chad and Chad's buddy, Bob
Wind out of South - very light early, picked up about 9 when cloud cover came in
20-25 Duck decoys set to south of blind with two robos
15-20 Goose decoys set to the east and slightly north of the ducks.
Lots of activity right at shooting time, many groups of teal dropping in from every direction, still kind of dark and hard to see.  Called the shot a couple times.  Had three or four or five teal laying out in the pond but too much activity to get out.  Group of five mallards came in, we took 3.  Now there are numerous ducks down so Chad and Jamin head out to gather the kill and of course geese fly over and look.  Back in the blind, a few groups of mallards are circling and Chad is speaking their language.  Two hens drop in and the greenhead comes right at us, we take him (2 more feet and Tom could have caught him).  A couple more teal and Jamin and I decide to head out about 10:30.  Just as we are getting in the car we hear shots, look toward the blind to see more ducks dropping for the air!  It was a good day, my birthday and a new gun!

Sat, Oct 24th

Went to the blind about 5pm - nobody there but me. After about an hour, a dozen geese flew in but I dropped 8 shells on the floor of the blind trying to get my gun loaded. By the time I did, they were all gone. After that, I did see two high flying geese go west and a lone duck circle the pond high about sunset but flew off.
